75TH INDEPENDENCE DAY / SWATANTRATA DIWAS

In the light of 75th Independence Day celebration, Wellington Hindi School proudly showcased a stellar performance by our students. The play was called “Swatantrata Diwas – A tribute to our National Heroes”.

A thought occurred to me a while ago when our team at Hindi school were discussing about this year’s Diwali programme. We thought why not plan something for the 15th of August prior to Diwali. It was special this year being the 75th Independence Day Celebration. I started pondering ideas on how can I make it inspirational for our community by showcasing the brave leaders of India who gave us freedom. I sat down one day and started putting my thoughts into words and later into a short play and finally into action.

Ideas kept pouring naturally as it was all ingrained in us from childhood. We grew up listening to stories of these great patrons and learning about them in History. No effort was required to bringing them alive as they are immortal in our lives and in Indian history.

Thus, the shape of my play was forming. But to bring that spark and putting a life into it we needed the best of talents. None other than our younger generation could have done it. Our Operations Manager or to be honest the soul of Hindi School and the valued member who has grown the school to where it is today Smt. Sunita Narayan ji had seen that spark and casted the most beautiful talent that was present in our Hindi School Wellington wide.

So, the play was on the roll. The storyline was a family of four discussing about India’s independence. Kids of the family were curious to know what independence meant and who were the people who brought the country its independence. The parents explained that in the form of bringing alive some of those great leaders. We role played 7 prominent leaders (Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jhansi ki Rani Laxmibai, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Sarojini Naidu, Bhagat Singh and of course Mahatma Gandhiji and Jawaharlal Nehru ji). Each student did justice to their respective character and gave out a great message as a tribute to our national leaders.

Finally, our sole message is:

‘The freedom fight is not over yet.  We have fought back with a known, visible invader to free our country. Now we all need to be warriors and fight back our invisible foreign body – Corona and free the whole world from its clutches.  This is a civic, social and moral responsibility on everyone’s shoulder so LETS DO IT.
