Trump cracks down on visas: 55 million under review, thousands already revoked

The Trump administration has launched one of the largest visa crackdowns in US history, with the State Department reviewing more than 55 million valid visas. The sweeping review is aimed at identifying holders who could face visa cancellation and deportation, the Associated Press reported.

Officials confirmed that all visa holders are under “continuous vetting,” which includes monitoring for overstays, crimes, and terrorism links. Those found ineligible will see their visas revoked and may be deported if they are already in the US.

The process covers everything from social media checks to foreign law enforcement records and violations of American law.

What began as a targeted review of student visa holders tied to pro-Palestinian or anti-Israel activity has now been expanded to every visa category.

Since Trump’s return to office, visa cancellations have surged—more than double overall, and nearly four times higher for student visas. Over 6,000 student visas have already been revoked for violations ranging from overstays and assault to terrorism-related activities. About 4,000 were linked to confirmed breaches, while 200–300 involved extremist ties.

The administration has also toughened visa issuance by requiring in-person interviews for nearly all applicants. The latest expansion of post-issuance monitoring signals an aggressive new phase in Trump’s immigration enforcement.
